Dear LSYC Members,
As we gear up for another great season at Lake Stockton Yacht Club, we want to share some information around PHRF ratings and the structure of our Cruise Race fleets—all aimed at ensuring transparency, inclusiveness, and fair competition for all racers.
We’ve been using PHRF handicaps in our races, and moving forward, we want to be more transparent about how each rating is determined. This clarity will help all members better understand their rating and how it’s applied on race day.
Ratings are sourced using the following approach:
Primary Source: New England PHRF Base Ratings
Secondary Source: If your boat isn’t listed in the New England database, we’ll use the US Sailing PHRF listing.
This clarity may result in minor rating adjustments for some boats, but our goal is not to penalize anyone—it’s to level the playing field, so that on any given day, the best sailor wins, regardless of gear or budget.
To further support inclusive racing, we’re also formally recognizing two Cruise Race fleets that will be awarded separate trophies for the Cruise Race Series:
Performance Fleet – For skippers looking to race hard and get the most out of their boats. These crews typically use racing sails, have lighter setups, and make performance a priority.
Cruising Fleet – For sailors who enjoy the spirit of competition but also want to focus on learning, having fun, or racing their boat as-is—cruising gear full tanks and all. No need for exotic sails or stripped-out interiors here.
We hope this structure encourages more members to get out on the water, regardless of how “race-ready” their boat may be. These changes will go into effect starting June 19th. If you're unsure which fleet fits best, or have questions about your rating, we're here to help.
Thanks for being part of our community and helping us build a club culture where everyone has a chance to sail, compete, and grow.
